Membership FAQs
-
A community designed to help people build meaningful, one-to-one connections through handwritten letters. We match you with a pen pal, provide a private mail-forwarding system, and give you the tools and encouragement to make letter writing a regular part of your life.
-
When you join, you'll complete a matching questionnaire so we can find a pen pal who is a good fit for you. You'll receive your Welcome Kit which explains the process and has everything you need to get started. When you write a letter to your pen pal, you send it to our secure mailing address. We forward it to your pen pal, so you don't have to share your personal mailing address with them.
-
For adults who want to slow down, write more, and build a genuine connection with someone they might never otherwise meet.
-
Not yet. We hear you: kids want pen pals (and we think that’s awesome!) 121 Letters is currently available to adults 18 and older. But we're exploring options for younger members in the future and will share more.
-
Yes! We welcome members internationally, with some exceptions. A small number of countries and regions may be excluded due to U.S. laws and international mailing or sanctions requirements. At this time, we’re unable to offer memberships to addresses in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Crimea, Donetsk, or Luhansk. Because these requirements can change, we reserve the right to update our available countries and regions as needed.

-
No. The Welcome Kit does not include stationery or return envelopes. You'll provide your own paper, envelopes, and postage for the letters you send.
We intentionally designed 121 Letters to take the friction out of finding and maintaining a pen pal, while leaving the creative part up to you. Your letters are yours to make personal - whether that means a favorite stationery set, a simple sheet of notebook paper, doodles in the margins, or something entirely your own.
We do provide the cards and return envelopes for all community activities.
-
We don’t currently offer membership pauses because we want to make sure every active pen pal can count on consistent correspondence. Pausing one person’s membership could leave their pen pal waiting indefinitely.
You can cancel your membership at any time. Memberships are not prorated, so if you cancel partway through a billing period, your membership will remain active through the end of that period and will not renew for the following month.
One important note: if you rejoin later, you may not be matched with the same pen pal. When a member cancels, we rematch their pen pal with another active member so they can continue receiving letters.
General Questions
-
When you join, we’ll ask a few questions - including how often you’d like to write - and use those answers, along with location, to make a thoughtful match. Our goal is: similar pace, different place, for pen pal matches.
Our goal isn’t for you to find someone exactly like you so we don’t ask for your specific interests. We hope you find someone who’s a good fit for the rhythm of letter writing while still leaving room for curiosity, surprise, and the fun of discovering someone different from you. -
Not much, and that’s intentional. We’ll send you your pen pal’s name but you won’t receive a bio or detailed profile beforehand. Part of the magic of having a pen pal is getting to know someone slowly, over time, through the letters you exchange. We want to move away from the labels, curated profiles, and quick first impressions of social media and make space for something more curious, personal, and unhurried.
You’ll get to discover who they are one letter at a time.
-
That's okay! Not every connection is going to be the right one. If the match isn't working for you, you can request a rematch by emailing hello@121letters.com.
-
Yes! You can add an additional pen pal to your membership for an additional monthly fee.
-
Pen pal relationships don't always move at the same pace. If you haven’t heard back for a bit, let us know at hello@121letters.com and we'll help you figure out what to do next.
-
Once you purchase a membership, you’ll immediately receive:
Your matching questionnaire - by email. This helps us understand things like how often you’d like to write and where you’re located so we can make a thoughtful match.
Once that’s complete, your 121 Letters Welcome Kit will arrive by snail mail with everything you need to get started.
We’ll match you as soon as we have a compatible pen pal. You’ll receive an email letting you know you’ve been matched, including your pen pal’s first name and who will write the first letter.
Once you have your match and your Welcome Kit, you’re ready to put pen to paper.
Pen Pal Matching
-
As long or as short as you'd like. A few paragraphs is enough. A three-page life update is also great. There's no minimum word count - and definitely no essay requirement.
-
Not at all. You can write on whatever paper you have available. A sheet of notebook paper is perfectly acceptable! The point is the letter - not creating the perfect piece of stationery.
-
No. There is no required number of letters you have to write each month. You can write as often as feels right for you. That said, if you're hoping to build an ongoing pen pal relationship, we encourage you to write consistently so your pen pal knows you're still there.
-
That depends on you and your pen pal! Some people may write every week, while others may write once or twice a month. There is no expectation that every letter needs to be answered immediately. We do our best to match pen pals based on how frequently they intend to write, but that’s not a strict commitment - we know life can have busy seasons.
-
We do not accept packages in our mail forwarding process but if you have built trust with your pen pal and feel comfortable exchanging addresses, you can do so and send packages directly.
-
Yes - this is your relationship. We start with a baseline of complete privacy so you can get to know your pen pal without feeling pressure to share personal information.
As you exchange letters and build trust, you’re welcome to share your phone number, email address, social media, or anything else you feel comfortable sharing. How your relationship develops - and what you choose to share - is entirely up to you. -
We recommend including your return address whenever you mail your letter to 121 Letters, just in case there’s an issue with delivery.
Don’t worry, your pen pal won’t see it. Your letter is sent to 121 Letters first, and we remove your return address before forwarding the letter to your pen pal. This allows us to help protect your privacy while still giving the postal service a way to return your letter to us if needed.
-
Your Welcome Kit includes address stickers and other tools to make addressing your letters easy (and we’ll send more throughout the year). You'll use the mailing information provided by 121 Letters rather than your pen pal's personal address.
-
Yes - members are responsible for postage when sending letters to 121 Letters for forwarding. This gives you the flexibility to choose how often you write, rather than building a fixed amount of postage into your membership.
We cover the postage to forward your letters to your pen pal, so the only postage you pay for your regular pen-pal correspondence is the postage to get your letter to 121 Letters.
For community events - like postcard exchanges and charity projects - we provide a stamped return envelope whenever possible, so participating is as easy as possible.
For international members, return envelopes for community events will not include a stamp. However, international members pay the same membership price as U.S. members - we don’t add an international surcharge.
In short: you cover postage to send your pen-pal letters to us; we cover the postage to get them to your pen pal.
Sending & Writing Letters
-
No. Protecting your privacy is one of the core parts of 121 Letters. Your personal mailing address is not shared with your pen pal.
-
You send your letter to the 121 Letters mailing address. We receive it, process it for forwarding, and send it on to your pen pal using their 121 Letters mailing information.
-
We open the envelope, but we do not read the contents of your letter.
Your letter arrives sealed with a privacy sticker, which helps ensure that the contents stay between you and your pen pal. We carefully open the envelope, remove the letter without reading it, and place it into a new envelope for forwarding - one without your return address so that stays private.
Our process is designed to protect the privacy of your correspondence while allowing us to safely and securely forward your mail.
-
Email hello@121letters.com with your new address so we can update our records.
-
Not at all. We hope you stay part of the community so you can participate in the quarterly community exchanges and charitable letter writing projects. And if you no longer need mail forwarding for that pen pal, we can retire that match in our system and we can rematch you with another pen pal within your same membership. Just email hello@121letters.com and let us know.
Privacy & Mail Forwarding
-
Your pen pal is at the heart of 121 Letters, but membership also gives you opportunities to participate in the broader 121 Letters community. You’ll receive mail from us every month. We’ll offer optional community mail activities, special projects, and other ways to make meaningful connections through the mail.
-
Every quarter, 121 Letters members will have the opportunity to participate in community-wide mail exchanges, these are themed recommendation swaps where you’ll fill out a postcard we send you, send it back, and receive someone else’s in return. These are separate from your regular pen pal relationship and give you another way to connect with people across the 121 Letters community.
-
Each quarter, we’ll organize opportunities for members to write letters for a good cause. These projects may involve writing encouraging notes to people who could use a little extra connection, participating in a community service initiative, or partnering with an organization that uses handwritten letters to make a difference.
Participation is always optional, but we hope these projects give you another way to use the simple act of putting pen to paper to make someone’s day a little brighter.
-
Yes! We’re building 121 Letters to be more than a pen pal matching service. As our community grows, we’ll introduce new ways for members to participate, connect, and enjoy the slower, more personal experience of communicating through the mail.
Some activities will be recurring, while others may be special or seasonal. We’ll always let you know about opportunities as they become available.
